Hmmm I have a question on this theme too… Id like to find out my family tree n the history of my family when I have the money to do so (when Im older since im a teen now) But Im from a country Azerbaijan and well Im not sure if anyone kept any records there since its a 3rd world country, would those ancestor finding systems work? because even in my grandparents’ time they didnt keep birth records…
You can be part of a project through Family Tree DNA, but would have to cover the costs, etc. I have never participated, but there are projects I qualify for.

Google ‘DNA tribes’ DNA tribes is the company that does the ancestry by autosomal DNA test. This test will tell you your ethnicity’s back to all 16 of your GG grandparents. They send a test kit out to you and you swab the inside of your mouth and send the sample back to them for analysis, be prepared to find at least ten main ethnicity’s in your genetic makeup!
The test costs around $230US.
There are 3 types of DNA. Baye gave you a good answer.
Y goes from father to son only
Mitochondrial goes from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughters pass it on to their children.
Autosomal which you get 50-50 from both parents. However, when you get back to your grandparents, it will not be 25-25-25-25. You get 50% a from your paternal grandparents and 50% from your maternal grandparents. However, it will not be an even breakdown between grandmother and grandfather on both sides. It will be bias in favor of one over the other and how you inherited this bias will not be the same as your siblings unless you have an identical twin.
Y & Mitochondrial goes back in a straight line virtually unchanged. Therefore those involved in genealogy research find it a valuable tool to match themselves with other family trees. It is useless unless it is used with family research. Now one company that only does Y & Mitochondrial testing advertises that they will help you discover your "deep ancestral roots." It is true in 2 lines only, if you are a male, they will assign you to a Haplogroup based on your DNA and show you the origin of your nomadic ancestors going back over 150,000 years. If you are a female it will be for only 1 line. You come from a vast myriad of family lines. You have 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents, 16 great great grandparents. It doubles each generation you go back. However, in each generation you would get your Y from only 1 and if you are male or female you get your Mitochondrial from only 1. For instance for your 16 great great grandparents, 14 will be left out if you are male and 15 will be left out if you are female.
If you are in genealogy research and want to have your Y & Mitochondrial done the oldest company with the largest database is
http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.Com
When you go into their website if you go under "feedback" there is a way you can email them and ask questions.
Now, there is one company that I know of in the U.S. that will take your Autosomal DNA and match you with population groups throughout the world. They won’t tell you that you are 1/2 of something, 1/4 of something else and 1/4 of another something else. They no doubt can’t do that as the same DNA crosses national, racial and ethnic boundaries.
There are no pure nationalities, races of ethnicities.
What they will do is show you your matches in descending order starting with the top.
The company is

When you go into their website if you go under "feedback" there is a way you can email them and ask questions.
I asked DNATribes if my sister with whom I share both parents had the same Autosomal test would her results be the same and they replied:
"Two siblings will each obtain unique results. Family members do typically share some regional or ethnic genetic affiliations, but in some cases matches can vary substantially between siblings."
I would imagine that is because what we inherit from our grandmother and grandfather on both sides can vary.
Now,how accurate I am not an expert. I can see if more than one company did this type of testing there can be some differences in results as one might have some population samples the other one didn’t. Baye who gave you the second answer says she has found ancestry in all of the matches they gave her.
Here is another link that explains DNA:

FamilyTreeDNA does do Autosomal testing but they will no longer give you an analysis. I had to send my results from them to DNATribes.
Now I had one person from one company tell me the only reason a person would want Autosomal testing is if they are biracial. That is pure bunk. Her company doesn’t do it. People whose ancestors that came through Ellis Island only probably have a better picture of the origin of their ancestry than those of us where many of our ancestors came in colonial days and the ones that came afterwards never saw Ellis Island.
Some people have the mistaken belief that all colonials came from what was called the British Isles. My maternal grandmother whose ancestry was 100% southern American colonial had an Alsatian German line that came to Maryland about 1700 and a French Huguenot that came to Virginia about the same time. She also had ancestors from Pomerania.
I am a participant in a Surname project at Family Tree DNA. Our family has a legend that we have been unable to prove or disprove through conventional genealogy methods so several members have submitted DNA and we are looking for more members in the old country to test in order to prove or disprove this legend. So far, we have been pleased with the results.
You can go to Family Tree DNA’s website and see if they have a surname group set-up for your Surname and proceed from there. Their website is: http://www.familytreedna.com/Default.aspx?c=1
how can people know their ancestry if they never been dna tested it’s impossible
I used http://www.familytreedna.com, the world’s oldest, largest and best such company. They have tutorials to teach about DNA, what it can/cannot do, etc.
They provide you your own webpage, provide a worldmap depicting where your ancestors came from and more.
By paper trail, I have traced my ancestry all over Europe, one country in Africa, plus Egypt, and several Middle East countries. By DNA, I have ancestors all over the globe. It is fun and exciting.
