It is mostly just for the curious. The AKC uses it to prove paternity etc. It will tell you the main breeds that left the most profound genetic markers, 2-3 usually. Most vets don't do that sort of DNA testing they are more interested in markers for defects. Most companies who do it mail you a test kit that you swap your dog with and send back. I don't remember any name but the advertise in the back of most dog mags and you can google something like ' dog breed DNA testing'.Good Luck

Most vets do the test now, almost all the breeds have been gene sequenced so the check of the DNA of any dog would show pretty clear which breeds are in it's background.

In fact the last visit I was at the vet for they were telling two different dog owners in the waiting room what the results were.

Phone your vet, if they don't have the test then try another vet in the phone book.

I doubt it in human dna testing they use what is called "garbage dna". that you can't tell anything from it not eye color, hair color or skin color, so I doubt you can do that witha dog. if u did it would probably cost bank, and not be worht it.

I had a Collie which had 1/4 German Shepherd named Mike. He was the greatest dog. I was young when he was a puppy, 2 years old, and I was a bit rough with him and sat on him sometimes, when he grew up he did the same to me and licked my face, I had to go outside with a squirt bottle to keep from getting mauled with love, and maybe a little revenge, I don't know. My grandfather took him to Alaska and lost him : (

Anyway, the tests are valid, and it's not hard to find the difference in breeds, even the family line in a breed is discoverable.

No, they can't tell hair color yet, but they can compare dna from a known dog or any animal and have certain parts of the dna that differ according to those lines.

My vet recently started offering that, so I inquired about it. She said it wasn't all that accurate and has a limited list of breeds that could be identified. Plus, she said it ran about $150! I'm curious too...but I think it's just as effective to make an educated guess. That's $150 I could use to buy my dogs treats and toys!

You can order the kit online and send it in! Its like $80 and it does work if your dog has tracable ancestory. I met a lady at the dog park 2 weeks ago who found out her basset hound that was brindle had whippet in her! It will tell you up to the 3 most prominent breeds of your dog. Her's revealed 2 breeds on one of her dogs and only one on the other.

Or you can post a picture on here and we (the Yahoo users) can get a pretty accurate breed for you.

I think you can have the procedure done at your local veterinarians office.
I am baffled on how this works tho. I can't understand how the DNA can reveal the breeds of a dog. If all DNA is basically different (no one has the exact same DNA make-up) then how could every collie have "collie DNA" or every poodle have "poodle DNA". It isn't even this easy for people - what I mean is - I may be white, and you may be white, but we don't have "white DNA". As far as I know, I don't even think that if the police found a totally decomposed body and ran DNA on it, that they could even tell you if the victim was white, black, hispanic, indian, etc. So I am totally confused on how dog DNA is narrowed down moreso than people DNA...
I don't know, I'm not knocking it or anything because I am not a doctor, or a scientist, or anything of the like - it just baffles me, that's all.
