In medical school do you ever do DNA testing?

I ask this question because it relates to a story I'm writing. My main character is a medical student and needs to have her DNA tested on her blood and her hair or saliva.
In medical school, would you ever do DNA tests and would you ever use your own DNA, specifically ones own DNA?

No. The equipment required is too expensive. There are only a few DNA testing labs in the US.
Also, you wouldn’t need to test hair and blood/saliva. The DNA results would be the same. All that’s required for DNA testing is mitochondria, which can be obtained from any sufficient amount of body fluid or tissue.
