Hello Diana. Research the Sam Sheppard case from 1953. He was a prominent Doctor accused and sentenced for killing his wife. He served 10 years in prison and lost his medical license. Dr Sheppard claimed it wasn't him but he was convicted and sentenced. Years after his death, his son reopened the case. The bloody evidence was still being held and it was proven by the DNA on the bloody rags that it really was the window washer that Dr Sheppard had claimed all along.

His son then sued Cuyahoga County in Ohio for wrongful imprisonment ( valued at $25,000 per year of wrongful incarceration) but lost since the law makes no provision for anyone but the incarcerated person to receive payment for the wrongdoing.

One of the earlier cases that were overturned due to DNA being used long after a case was closed but reopened after DNA was found to be highly conclusive.

I hope this helps and you can find it useful
