Shoet tandem repeats are the non-coding regions of chromosome called as heterochromatin. These are short copies of a specific stretch of DNA sequences which are not active. They are different in different indiviguals and are specific to particular indivigual. The are intersperced between normal coding genes or may be present in certain chromosomes as SAT(satellite) bodies.Because of their uniqueness they are used for DNA fingerprinting.
